barley pads

Has anyone had experience with the parley pads designed to clean pond water?  
I purchased from Garden Supply and the pad has fallen in shreds from the 
frame and is loose in the water.  Any suggestions why this would happen?  I sent 
an email to GS to see what they have to say.
