Kitty,

The ivy is  hedera helix.  I've just found a website that deals with its
removal, but any other ideas would be appreciated!

Now that I think of it, the copper hanging dish was advertised as a bird
bath as well!  I didn't want to have to change the water in it every few
days, due to mosquitoes.
