I had a pretty good sized clump in Florida--maybe 7-8 years old--that started as a single plant in a 7-gallon can/pot. When I left, it was above the ridge of the roof and mostly in full sun with no ill effects.
As an aside: I think the intensity of south Florida sunlight is perhaps the most important differentiating factor in growing stuff there. The temperatures are not that different, the humidity is not that different, but the intensity of the sunlight is way different.

How about growing it up next to the south- facing wall of your house? Since they grow well in SoCal, and as far north as Sacramento, as well as along the Gulf Coast, I bet it will thrive in a Beaufort microclimate. [Two people in Beaufort have told Dave's Garden that they grow it--but I couldn't find anything specific.] Being 3-gallon, it will take a while to bloom--but will be well worth the wait when it does. If the flowers had stems, they'd be a florist's delight. Great plant; one of my favorite landscape "tropicals"--low maintenance, pest free. Leaves will tatter in high winds, but that doesn't seem to produce ill effects other than visual ones. It clumps, like a banana, but doesn't sucker or spread very fast.On Aug 21, 2008, at 3:35 PM, andreah wrote:Got a nice healthy Stelizia nicolai today way cheapNow what do I do with it? I realize I have to bring it in but what's the bestway to get it to bloom. It may be too small- it's in a 3 gallon. Thoughts??
