RE: ponderosa pines

I better take my tree book with me next time we go. I was with one of
the rangers who told me to sniff it...smelled like vanilla to me...

Er... those are Jeffrey pines [Pinus jeffreyi] that smell like
vanilla. A close relative of the ponderosa.
