Cathy,

          It is my understanding that Azaleas, and all Rhododendrons, in
fact, are poisonous to most mammals -- dogs, horses, cattle, etc.  One
notable exception is deer, which have a chemical (enzyme perhaps?) in their
stomachs that counteracts the toxin, so that they are able to keep our
gardens well pruned.
