the same birds--i think--who have continued to propagate my bird peppers also gave we a seedling fig. if i can manage not to kill for a few years, we'll see if it's any good. the real problem with figs in this part of the world is nematodes. i've written about this before. my most productive in a genetically engineered puppy from louisiana state university which is nematode proof. i have no idea where the seedling is seed from--except the birds seem to prefer the lsu tree, also.

figs are traditionally propagated by air-layering. all ficus are. except f. pimula, the creeping fig. so perhaps barbara's friend's stick was the cut-off end of an air-layer.
