Having had several days of trouble with the 'mail' function on OSX, including loss of 47 unread messages, I may be repeating information someone else has contributed, but I recall there was a question about turmeric. It is a seasoning (how's that for dodging the herb/spice conundrum?) made from the dried, ground rhizomes of Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaecea). It is also used to create yellow dye used for silk and carpets in the Indian subcontinent and surrounding countries.

Ah, possibly. But with sesame you get texture. There are several senses

one of the more interesting things to me is i have a mind set about the
word "spice." i expect a spice to have a flamboyant flavor. the problem i
have then is explaining a sesame seed, the blandest of all edibles.
