Kitty's comment reminded me to thank you, Auralie, for your recommendation of 
David Handler's Berger and Mitry mysteries.  That was almost exactly the way 
cats were described in The Cold Blue Blood, which I am currently enjoying.  I 
decided to start with the first book of that series, and now I am looking 
forward to reading the other two!
