Kathy, here many plants--mostly the holiday and gift stuff, but not entirely--are sold by 10-inch size. This may result from the use of more expensive pots than nursery blacks for many small sizes. There's also an increasing use of peat pots [up to 4-inch size] and paper pots for vegetable and herb plants. Most caladiums at the local HD are sold in 6-inch paper pots.
Other things I've noticed: Hard to find a six-pack of 2-inch bedding plants; minimum seems to be an 18 pack. Minimum size for individual bedding plants is 3 inches and, in many instances, creeping up on 4 inches. It's not unusual to see 10-inch vegetables and herbs--sometimes tomatoes and pepper with fruit as well as flowers. The 2-gallon and 5-gallon nursery pots have nearly disappeared; sizes now increase from 1 gallon to 3 gallon to 7 gallon [note that these pot-size increases raise the price of the plant, not necessarily its size or age].

Perhaps an explanation at the beginning of the catalog...something on the order of "gal means "trade gallon" which holds 3 qts." But nobody does this. Maybeit's time they did.
