There a place in "Crime & Punishment" where Raskolnikov thinks
something like [it's been a long time] "to stand forever on a narrow
ledge above an abyss is better than to die at once." Well, maybe. But
to spend a lifetime eating broccoli and soy beans rather than pate and
champagne is not.
