Re: Fwd: Tulsa Ice Storm '07
Bradford Pears were by FAR the worst trees. So MANY of them just split
right down the center. We have an ash in our back yard that makes it
through EVERY ice storm without any damage. The large, old oaks were hit
pretty bad too. So were the large, old sycamore trees. Sweet gums - for
some reason - seem almost rubbery to me so I guess that's why they
didn't break too badly - they bend more. A lot of the evergreen trees
broke in half because they couldn't take the weight of all the ice on
the greenery. They bent all the way over to the ground, then snapped.
Horrible to see.

Jesse,
5 years ago it really did look like that but this year we lucked out.
The other day my Shumard Oak had limbs bent to the ground but nothing broke.
They have had people on radio programs trying to educate everyone as to what
trees to plant back. No Bradford Pears! I think they broke the worst.
Jesse, when you look around town, what trees are the worst and which trees
had the most overall damage?
I heard Allen Storjohann, the Myriad Botanical Gardens Manager on the
radio. He was saying the tree that he noticed that had the least damage was
the Sweetgum. That seemed strange.
