lots of analyses of public reaction to the columbia catastrophe on the web. howard kurtz included much of it in his media column in today's washington post [near the bottom]. it's worth a read.

It always amazes me how a disaster will bring out the best (and occasionally the worst) in people. But people have gone out of their way here to preserve and protect the wreckage. You don't hear it on the national news. Schools have shut down, they'll have to make up days in the summer and pay outrageous electric bills to do so. Others have closed their businesses, called in sick to their jobs, and so forth - to stand guard over the little bit of wreckage that may make the difference in this investigation to prevent such a tragedy again.
