I believe most of them have had central heat added.  The problem is they are 
not well insulated, and none of the fireplaces have dampers.  I grew up in a 
house with individual open-flame gas heaters in each room.  We had to turn 
them off at night and open the windows a little so we wouldn't die in the 
event of a leak.  We just used a lot of quilts.
