Sounds like mailbox bashing is the sport of choice in your area, too.
Our local jerks have even managed to knock over mailboxes set in
mortared brick pillars. When we moved to the county we had a friend who
is a metal smith make us a  mailbox of 1" thick plate steel and mounted
it on a hollow steel pole set in and filled with concrete.  The vandals
can't even dent it.  Of course, we'll probably be sued one of these days
by the family of some kid who sustains a stress fracture in his arm when
he swings at it with a baseball bat while driving down the road!

The next time someone knocks down your mailbox, or it gets replaced...
paint and decorate the old one and place it in the yard. Works wonders
for a place to stash stuff....
