I don't know, Ceres. The major differences between here and Los Angeles are night-time temperatures [higher here], annual rainfall [more here], and humidity [higher here]. It's probably a combination of those things. There is a very nice foundation shrub, Xylosma congestum, used in LA that won't live much more than a week here.
