Re: Jesse's birthday now smoking

EXACTLY! Certain things do trigger the urge. When I quit...I had the "beer = cigarette" problem too. So...I just quit drinking for awhile too. And after all these years (20+) I can still crave one when I'm outside having a glass of wine sitting by my chiminea. I'd steal a few of Pam's when she and I were out there. But the next day...I'd have a horrible nicotine headache. It's a tough habit to kick.

I'm not sure it ever goes completely away. It gets less and less demanding every hour, although some sort of crisis can temporarily bring it back in spades. I think that's why a lot of folks fail--big fight with the spouse or get canned at work--and the first thing that comes to mind is to light up. But if you know that might happen you can probably figure out how to manage it.

I think the other reason some folks fail is other behaviors that one associates with smoking. Friend of mine said once: "How come every time I have a beer I want a cigaret but every time I have a cigaret I don't want a beer?"

how long is it before the "habit" thing subsides?

I'm on your side, too. It's hard to do--and make it stick, but
definitely worth the effort.

Well, Eva, you are obviously a better woman than I am. Every husband
who
tried to make me do anything is now an 'ex.' I stopped smoking, too,
on
Jan. 1. Not cold turkey, however. I used the nicotine gum, and it
has been
all right -- so far. I'm here for you, Miss Pam.

Good luck, Pam! You can do it. It's hard to do, but you are a tough
cookie.
You can do it. I have faith in you.

I quit cold turkey when Steve & I got married. He made me do it.
