I love Maine, too. When my children were little we lived in Connecticut, and every summer my son went to camp at Pleasant Lake in Maine. It was between Lincoln and Lee on Route 2 on the way to Calais. I have driven all over the state just looking at the scenery. And I agree with you, Theresa, the growing season in Maine might be short, but it is intense.

Ron- You live in a breath-taking area of the US. Makes me a bit homesick, in fact. I lived in Maine before moving to California (now that was a major change!). I found several nurseries and a seed company (the name of which I can't recall right now) from Canada that specialized in short-season varieties of flower and veggies. The thing that always amazed me when I lived in Maine was how incredibly fast everything grew during summer! Those long hours of daylight were amazing growth stimulators! I recall being most enthralled with the Rugosa rose "trees" in Maine- some were huge- reaching up to the second story of some houses! And the soil where I lived (downeast Maine- Eastport) was the best of anywhere I have lived!

I have been lurking since AHS site also but have limited knowledge on gardening. Living in central Maine, gardening is a bit of a challenge part of the year. (We have a new snow of 18" on the ground & a bit cold - teens) hoping for a early planting time. I have learned a lot from many of you guys & gals Difficult to contribute a lot when I know so little but trying to learn. I have lots of land to grow on & am building beds from scratch trying to grow all the easy plants but trying to cultivate a few difficult ones. I spend time juggling my retirement with a lovely bride of 36 years & household chores & gardening when I have time.
Thanks for all you teach me with your postings.
