Re: Re: Head count...
Kay,
I too am a Master Gardener, and although that has much to do with gardening,
being a MG is all about volunteering - sharing that information with others
through your county extension service. We have a couple of volunteers who
have never taken the classes (we call them "Friends of the Garden") who I
would consider real MGs because they contribute so much. Meanwhile we also
have people who have taken the classes and have simply used the information
for their own benefit, after they did their initial required time and
received their certificate. These people are simply knowledgable gardeners,
not Master Gardeners. Indiana has recently moved forward to rescind their
MG status unless they contribute a minimal amount of hours every year.
Being a MG is such a rewarding experience, but I realize some counties don't
provide good opportunities for their MGs. In those cases, the MGs have to
prod the extension agent or contact the state. We have several surrounding
counties that have very small MG groups and they work together with our
larger county group to accomplish bigger and better things.
