No, this is a specific organization and I am sure it is done in other states
too.  For a $10 membership fee ($15 for a couple), anyone who would like to
join "The Friends of the Garden" gets a monthly newsletter, 10% off
purchases at our plant sales and they may participate in special events like
bus trips that are arranged for MGs.  One other perk is that they may work
with MGs on our "workdays", but never on their own.  This means that Ken,
who enjoys moving concrete pavers and mountains of mulch, and most of all,
sharing lunch with us, gets to have a lot of fun without investing in the
class.  And we love it when he shows up.  (Any FOG who helps us in the
gardens has to read and sign a 3 page safety statement)  This is how Nina,
Dave's wife, was able to spend time with her husband at his MG activities,
though she couldn't attend the classes because of the schedule.  This is how
people can sort of give it a test run to see if they like what's going on
before they decide to become MGs.  It works great for us.
