RE: olive tree


I've always wanted to try curing them but never got around to it when I knew
people who had olive trees. Maybe someday. They are quite attractive with
all those gnarled branches, the dull green leaf with the silver underside. 
There's an olive just down the street here from where I work. Unfortunately
many years ago it froze back very hard. When it resprouted from the roots,
the landscape maintainers figured it was a shrub and they've pruned it into
a box shape. A sorry fate.

Olives don't like it here, too humid. I wish they did; I think they're 
fantastic landscape trees. When I lived in the San Joaquin Valley, I 
had two Manzanillo [sp?] olives and regularly cured about 5 gallons a 
year; hardest part was picking and slitting them.
