I have hopes that he'll be all right in the long haul; after all, he is only about 10 months old. I don't expect him to be well behaved until he's about 3 years old. At least, that's been my experience. I'm sorry Otis can't run around outside for 3+ hours every day, but that's just not a possibility. The alternative would be to send him to sure death in a shelter. He's a happy little fellow, and he does have cat company all day long. So he's not completely alone. Believe me, if there were another way for him to grow up we would be doing it.

I've raised lots of dogs, some purebreds, mostly strays of many breeds. In my experience, that amount of exercise, if the dog is also confined to one room in the house, is not conducive to good dog behavior. With active, slowly maturing larger breeds, 3 Hours per day of active run and play is barely enough between 3 months and about 2 years. If they're not pretty well worn out when they come in, they're bored, destructive, and rambunctious in the house. This is especially true of hounds and sporting breeds.

The only times I've had trouble with dogs is when I haven't had the time to give them the exercise they need... T'ain't pretty!

He goes out three times a day, most days, two are 15-20 minute walks with me and Precious. Around noon I let him out in the backyard under close supervision. It's fenced, but there are plants and resident kitties to consider. :-) At least Otis is kennel-trained and house broken. It could be worse.
