Jim,
I'm so envious of their soil and climate, even though it does rain a lot in the cooler months.

It should do very well in Eugene, Godi. On Feb 14, 2006, at 2:37 PM, MICHAEL HABIB wrote:As mentioned at a previous posting I bought the "fern flower" or hardy gloxinia at the Maymont Flower Show. Since some of you said that they don't take the heat very well, I will take the tubers to my daughter in law in Eugene, Oregon. She will love the plants and hopefully they will do well for her.
I must admit that I could have asked more questions of those Dutch girls, but I was rushing around, trying to see everything, including the lectures.

Ah Zem. I think that most plant people are fair and honest, but I don't think that the "Wonderflower" folks are plant people, just hucksters and snake oil purveyors.

You are right, Daryl. I realize I am naive to think that all plant people are fair and honest. :-(

My sister was at Maymont also and unfortunately got suckered into buying the "Japanese Wonderflower". She knows Four o'clock, since we grew it when we were kids, but the sign wasn't very descriptive and the name was deceptive. And "Flowering Fern" my foot!
I think that the folks hosting these garden shows should be told in no uncertain terms that allowing unscrupulous vendors to deceive unknowing buyers will result in lower attendance and or negative publicity. What do you think?

Jim and Daryl,-------------------------------------------------------------------- -
Thanks for IDing the hardy gloxinia. I bought three tubers at the Maymont flower show in Richmond. Those pretty Dutch girls didn't seem to know too much about the plants. The show seemed a bit empty this year, because a lot of the vendors were at the DC home and garden show.
We had 8 inches of snow last night. Ok, we had our winter, let's move on to spring!!
