Cyndi, I don't have friends interested in gardening to the same degree
either. I give my friends plants to decorate their landscape, but that's
their idea of it - decoration. I do have friends within the MG organization
that of course get into it more in depth, but I don't have a close
relationship with any of them. That's why I value the Chat relationships.
I can share with y'all the things that I'm more intense about - the things
that might cause my friends and even many MGs I know to roll their eyes.

But you have to admit that the pace of gardening is quite a bit slower
than say, computer games or text messaging or TV. I suspect the
majority of people don't think about gardening until they own their
own home. And if they're already used to - I can't think of the word I
want but - having a short attention span, then it's harder to get used
to this slower pace. I agree there's a lot going on in the garden, but
if you're used to results measured in seconds, then gardening isn't
going to give you that instant gratification.
I don't know about the rest of you, since many of you are in the
business it's likely your friends are gardeners too. You belong to
clubs and so forth. But I don't know anyone in person (excluding
y'all) who does what I do. A few people enjoy their roses, they have a
couple tomato plants in the summer, and that's it. I don't see
anything around town that looks like my yard - there are nice
landscapes to be sure but they are things that the paid-for gardeners
can mow & blow. Maybe it's all hidden in back yards...
Anyway I think that as people get older and have more free time they
appreciate the process more.

Cyndi,

If a gardener's time is spent "sitting around waiting for something to
happen", they're not gardening. Or not observing. There's never a
moment in my garden when there isn't something new to explore, and
I've been doing it for more than 50 years.

Saw an article in the paper the other day that says the number of
people who fish as a hobby is way down. Kids don't go fishing with
dad or grandpa (a stereotype, but there you are)because they think
it's just sitting around waiting for something to happen.
Maybe the same might be true for gardening. Too much competition for
their time.

The stats do show that gardening as a hobby has diminished.

Rayna had you for a shining example, as did many of us with our
mothers and grandmothers. I'm afraid we're going to lose that next
generation because they're so distanced from the deep roots that we
had, and because the hucksters are giving them false promises and no
knowledge.

If this new generation is not given guidance to quick and easy
success with gardening, I'm afraid they may abandon it altogether.
With a bit of nurturing, from us and from the Green Industry, they
can find what suits them at several stages of their lives.

I had read that the number of avid gardeners are down significantly.
I understand many young folks are opting for low or no work landscaping.
It
is sad, but I do understand how difficult it is to work full time,
raise children, be involved in the community and try to keep up with
house and property. I just think they miss "smelling the roses." I
have great hopes that as their lives slow down, they will pick up
the trowel. My girls are certainly doing that now.

Daughter Rayna has turned more than half of her front yard into a
little park for passers-by with a garden arch, bench, pathway and
lovely plantings.
It is still a very young garden but I know that this year it will be
full and beautiful. She has met most of her neighbors through her
garden.
Three years ago, she thought gardening was frivolous....
