Re: Chicago really Chicago
Dont be scared! It really depends on the weather. The day of a big snow
storm the roads will be trashed. Most times 24 hours will have all main
roads clear enough to drive with out that white knuckle effect. What you
really have to watch is the wind here. IF it is high, it will put all
the snow right back on the road with an added bonus of ice under it.
What ever you do... don't move a chair and park your vehicle there....
it will get trashed.
There are plenty of things to do here as long as you want to brave the
cold. The shoreline is awesome. They have carriage rides. Sears tower
gives you a view of the entire town from that height. There are many
shows at the theaters. Navy Pier is also somewhere you might want to see
and they do have indoor stuff there including an imax theater.
If it was summer, just walking around is interesting with all the
historical buildings, buckingham fountain, a walk down state street or
the magnifient mile, shoreline parks, and nightly outdoor concerts....
but it is winter.
So what do you want to do? Plenty of strip bars and casinos around
too...How much time are you going to have? A day, a few hours, assuming
you are with your son, I am sure there will be restrictions on time? You
actually might do well with him in uniform in tow- most gang bangers
leave the service folks alone. At least they have respect for them.

Well you scared me about driving so I was thinking of public
transportation. Our hotel, Courtyard by Marriot, is in Waukegan but the
base is ten miles closer to downtown.

Your not renting a car?? Hum.... within the city limits there is all
kindsa transportation from buses, el trains, subways..... but outside
not so sure about that. Probably a train that would take you into
downtown.
I might also mention that not all neighborhoods of chicago should be
visited... some are very rough. The magnificant mile is great, but a few
blocks over is somewhere you don't need to be...
Just what town is the hotel you are staying in?

Hey uh, Donna or someone else you bringing up the topic of driving
remind me to ask this question which is is there public transportation
from the Waukegan...now Linda tells me that we're a lot closer than
Waukegan. Anyway, is there a bus system or something to take us into
downtown Chicago?

Next week when??
Pack all your warm clothes and plan on buying a jacket or three....Your
gonna freeze here. Sunday high is supposed to get to 7 and with the wind
predicted, it will feel like minus 20 something.
You must be up by Great Lakes, so you are actually way north of the
city. Plan on it taking awhile to get to the heart of Chicago as they
just got 13-20 inches of snow the other day... and with all the cold
weather setting in (not to mention it is snowing now and more later
tonight) it might be rough for you to be driving in it if you are not
used to snow and ice.
I am a southsider (40 miles south of Chicago) so I don't go up there very often.
I am sure Linda would like Gunree mills, a large store outlet area. http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=1251
Judy is right, we have some of the best museums around.

http://www.artic.edu/aic/ http://www.sheddaquarium.org/ The auto show
starts this weekend too.

All of those are in the same area.
Also in the downtown area is the Lincoln Park conservatory if you need
some green time.

Hey folks
We could use some guidance here. Next week we're travelling to Chicago
to watch my son graduate from basic training and since the only time I
have visited that city was when I was going somewhere else I'm looking
for a few suggestions that Linda, Jason and I would enjoy visiting. I'm
sure there isn't much in the garden line this time of year but that
wouldn't make Linda and Jason overly happy anyway. So, for you folks
that know the windy city and can make some restaurant suggestions that
would be great.
Thanks guys
