Re: Starting mesquite seeds

Update. I just read that the seeds are edible and a source of food for wildlife, so maybe they need to pass through one or another gut to germinate?

Since neither scarification nor boiling water are usually available to Ma Nature, gotta wonder how the mesquite germinates naturally. It's not exactly a rare plant.

I gathered up some seeds from the local mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa)

I haven't done scarification before but I'm thinking I would just rub
them on sandpaper a little. How would you do the boiling water trick?
Put them in a colander and pour it over, or soak them for a few minutes?
The website doesn't say how to do it.
