thanks Jim-not an original thought though-a friend of mine tried it on a whim and it worked great. She was afraid she had killed the moonflower seed, but no, it germinated almost immediately.

Lots of things eat them so perhaps the species relies on a quick start and any seeds left over aren't as crucial for survival. I think they are a real weed in Texas although not so common in the wild here. There are some out on the edges of the dry lakebeds and here at work they plant them extensively as landscape trees.
