Any insight about how the selections are made? Is it like the Oscars [expensive campaigns/bribe the judges] or something else? Could be the market is such it discourages the necessary promotion for reduced returns. Besides, the whole exercise is kind of silly, isn't it? Turnip of the Year! [Oops... sacrilege.]
