I think the saltpetre simply kick-starts the growth; apparently, the strong black tea [tannic acid] actually etches the seed coat.

Incidentally, I recently heard that soaking seeds for 4-5 hours in
very strong black tea works as well as sanding and takes a lot less
effort. Haven't tried it so not too sure it works... but the source
has a wonderful garden.

week- tried a bunch of different methods to see what helped boost
success (soaking in water, cold period in fridge, sanding with sand

sanded ones are winning by a mile!!  It is so exciting, we have a
