And in the fall when our 50mph winds whip up blinding dust storms, you can tell me about the fall colors in your neighborhood. I may not want to live with snow but believe me, this desert climate is not kind. At the moment it is dreary grey here too with the occasional raindrop and about 50F, supposed to get a little colder with clouds and showers through the weekend. I gave husband his chore for the weekend, he is charged with pulling out the giant rosemary bush in the vegetable garden. We have several others in the front so I don't need it for kitchen herbs and it is so big it provides a haven for ground squirrels and rabbits underneath it. It has irrigation so I could reutilize that space for something else. Yesterday I woke up to 6" of snow on the ground... today, it was another inch but since some of it melted from the previous day, it had a nice coating of ice under the new snow..... I have no idea what sunshine looks like.... can't remember a day that wasn't overcast and cloudy..... After our extremely bitter cold a week ago we had three days of unseasonably mild weather - low 30s at night and low 40s in the daytime, but still gloomy. Then one day of sunshine, and now we have a lovely mix of rain, sleet and snow with temperature at 33 degrees. I find it hard to imagine more disagreeable weather. My seed orders came this week, but some days I wonder if I'll ever get to plant them. Saw the first chipmunk yesterday and another this morning. They usually stay dormant for a few more weeks. They are such a plague, I'm almost tempted to resort to the remedy an old lady used to tell me. She used to say, "Just get a package of Ex-lax and put it around your garden - you'll have no more trouble with them." I could never bring myself to do that, but last year they were eating the seeds in the ground as fast as I could plant them. I have quite a few daffodils blooming now, I wish I could remember to pick some in the morning to take to work, it's so cheery to see them on my desk. And the Earlicheer ones smell so good too. It wasn't particularly good weather last weekend. My volunteer thing cancelled on Saturday due to rain Friday night, and we decided we were too wimpy to ride in the wind, but it was good enough to work outside for a while. I spent time digging grass out of the front garden beds and when I got bored with that I pruned back rabbitbrush and salvias. Planted some more seeds in the greenhouse too, and I located an ocotillo I could take some cuttings from. They aren't too common here but I figured I would try starting them. It rained again Sunday afternoon and the forecast says another front is coming in Saturday. Figures it would be the weekend. But if I can't ride and it isn't actually pouring I will be out in the front garden, I was looking at some things I can do even if it's drizzling out. I think I could plant some more of the veggie garden too, even though it's a month till last frost I could take a chance with the chard, cilantro, and maybe spinach.
