Enc = Encyclia, a genus of about 150 species, mainly evergreen, epiphytic orchids found in the US and from Mexico and the West Indies south to tropical N. South America, ocurring in forest from sea level to 10,000ft. They are pseudobulbous, sometimes rounded or elongated, and usually 2 narrowly oblong to strap-shaped or linear to elliptic, fleshy or leathery leaves. Fragrant flowers though not always, produced from the apexes of the pseudobulbs, for the most part in the late spring or summer. It is a cool-growing orchid. Should be grown in epiphytic orchid potting mix in slatted basket, in bright filtered light or full light with shade from hot sun. Water freely in active growth, you can apply fertilizer at every third watering. Keep dry in the winter. Encyclia cochleata, an evergreen orchid with flattened pear-shaped to ellipsoid pseudobulbs and elliptic to lance-shaped leaves, 8-14in long. Ribbon like flowers, 4in long, with twisted, pale green sepals and petals, dark purple lips flushed yellowish green, and white bases with deep purple veins, are produced in racemes to 20in long intermittently throughtout the year. Native to Florida, Mexica, Colombia, Venezuela. 52-54F/11-12C, Max 86F/30C. Happy New Year.
