Well, Peggy, Liriope is easy from seed and L. spicata is the running
form and will, with some time, fill in around planted bits on its own
- it's the best one for groundcover as L. muscari is a clump former
and stays in a clump.  Get your hands on some seed and start
propagating:-)

I think, once established, Liriope would even withstand dog traffic -
it is tough, tough, tough.

What you need to do is attack this in small bits - carve a bit out of
the grass and plant Liriope or something else this year and next year
enlarge the area and keep that up until you've covered all  you want.
 That way, it's not such a massive nor expensive proposition at one
go.
