Those two programs are National Garden Clubs schools.  The third is 
Environmental Studies - also very good.  These are programs with quite 
ambitious prescribed curriculums.  The speakers must be approved by the 
national organization, and the specifications are pretty stiff.
New York State has another program which is unique to this state - 
Horticulture Schools for Judges and Exhibitors.  I have tried to get the 
state to change the title to Hort. Sch. for Exhibitors and Judges, since that 
would more nearly reflect the actual case.  This is a series of four schools, 
reflecting four growing seasons.  Each individual school features 
classification, culture and exhibition of two major plant genera or types, 
one section on either general botany or flower show practice, and one section 
on a general type of growth.  For instance, the school I am trying to 
organize or the end of April will have Small bulbs; Rhododendrons; Ferns (or 
Rock Garden Plants - that speaker is still up in the air); Xeriscapic 
gardening; and a short feature on Dwarf and Miniature plants as relates to 
Petite Flower Shows.  We get local specialists, often plant society people, 
to be our speakers - the National schools require you to choose a speaker 
from their list, who may or may not be knowledgable about local conditions.  
We also include information on what flower show judges look for in exhibits.  
What we try to give is basic information about the plant, plus how to grow it 
best, and how to choose the best specimen for exhibit.
The National Garden Clubs Gardening Study chairman usually approves our 
schools as refreshers for Gardening Study Consultants.
