Hey-I'm right in there with that one. I will always be Ms. Andrea
Hodges.
I
always get amused by our garden club ladies and other socialites here
in
Beaufort who introduce them selves as Mrs. George Trask or whatever. I
cannot IMAGINE living my life as an appendage.
A close friend of mine who is a doctor went into an art gallery with
her
husband here some years ago. Her husband (who was also a Dr.
)introduced
himself and the owner of the gallery (a woman) said to Andra, "Well
aren't
you just the luckiest thing, you caught yourself a DOCTOR." Andra
turned
around and walked out and never went back. I was amazed at that woman.
What
an idiot!

Spoken like a true 20th-21st century woman! Friends of my mother's
(and
grandmother's) always went by the title "Mrs. John Smith" -- didn't
even
use
their own female name!!! just an appendage to their husband---

OK- I have to put in my 2 cents here. I have never, ever understood
the
Mrs. thing- why would a woman's title change just because she got
married.
My vote is that everyone is Ms. - married or not. This reflects
gender
(just as Mr. does) not marital status. I am married, and still use
Ms.
I
absolutely hate is when I get mail addressed to Mrs. John Witt.- who
the
heck is that? My name is Theresa.
I love my husband, but I am my own person- not some appendage.

People call me Mrs. Evans all the time. I tell them Mrs. Evans is my
mother, not me. When people find out I've never been married, most
are
astounded, even in this day and age. (was engaged twice, it didn't
"take")
It's amazing, isn't it??

Jim,
I guess what I should have said was that understood their use of the
term,
but didn't agree with it.
I remember in the late 70s a friend of mine, a pilot, lost out on a
job
to
a woman who had a lot less flying time. They said they had to hire
women.
I don't agree with that. I also had a husband who refused to tip
waiters;
didn't want to "encourage them to stay in that line of work" because
he
wanted to be waited on by a cute girl. (I always left the guy a
nice
big
tip)
I also resent the refusal to use the title Ms. A salesperson called
and
referred to me as Mrs. Morrissy, I told her I'm not married and that
it
was
bad form to assume I was. She said she was instructed to use only
Mrs.
I
resent this - as if single people don't count. Then I received a
Cemetery
service offering through my church, addressed to Kitty Morrissy.
All
3
pages of the letter described everything offered as being
conditioned
on
the purchase of 2 plots, vaults, urns, whatever. I called to tell
them
that this is exceptionally rude marketing, and were I interested in
such
services, I would definitely shop elsewhere.
Why don't single people count?
Kitty

you're right of course, kitty. but at risk of being a sexist, i
think
the
women who have carried the torch against sexist behavior by men
against
women have cozened the word as their own with only their definition
as
acceptable.
i think that's why when cooler heads [or both sexes] joined the
discussion,
reverse sexism came to be used as the other kind.

What
do
you mean by reverse sexism? Being sexist is the same abhorant
behavior
whether it is a preference of male over female or female over
male.
Reverse sexism then would be the opposite; no preference, wouldn't
it?
