My research also tells me that the rhizomes will burrow up to 3 ft to get under a barrier, too. (Of course, it is a characteristic that is probably species specific...)

Better have a high lip or those suckers will jump over the liner and take over the pond. One member did this and had a very big mess, swears they are worse than cattails...

Eva, a bamboo nursery down here [which wouldn't do for your needs] contain running bamboos with neoprene pond liner. Since the rhizomes are not deep, it seems to work.

We have been hit badly from the arctic blast. It has been bitterly cold this month, and the even colder, biting wind that has been coming downthisthe north has been absolutely brutal, though Boston, Mass. has had much colder weather then we have had.
I expect that in the Spring I will find that I lost alot of plantsnearwinter.
So, I have been thinking of planting a clumping variety of bamboopreliminarythe pond. Does anyone know of any good suppliers? I did somethatresearch online this morning, but I have only been able to find nurseries--sell the running bamboo varieties. I have enough weeds to fight in my yardNewsthe last thing I need to battle with is an invasive bamboo.

Eva are you considered part of the nasty artic blast in the east?havereports here stating temps at -29F, add the wind chill and burrrr.
Do we have anyone on the list in that area?
Not that far north, but above Eva, in the lower Hudson Valley werained.been having a brutal winter. Cold into the teens in early December, followed by more than a foot of snow. Then around Christmas it warmed up andfreeze. All the snow melted, and there were even some nights when it didn'tcover.Temps up into the 60s. Some shrubs were budding, and a few bulbs pushing up. Then with the ground all bare, around January 7 it fell to negative numbers, and has been above freezing only one day since. We did have about 4 inches of snow last week, but there were ten days of brutal cold with no snowItI'm afraid we will lose lots of things this year that usually survive.nextwas below zero this morning, but is predicted to snow tonight and be milder---------------------------------------------------------------------week, like up to maybe 34 degrees by Thursday. The cold I can live with, but very cold temperatures when the ground is bare make me unhappy. I tell myself if I lose a lot of plants it gives me more room to try something new. Auralie
