RE: NWF habitat certification - pond heater

Alright Chris!  That is fabulous!  I wonder, knowing how this group loves
not only plant life, but the diversity of other living creatures as well
(except deer/rabbits that eat our favorite plants,) how many of us might
qualify for the certification?

We use a floating heater as well.  I don't know the details as my
husband is in charge of the pond.  That's the ONLY garden maintenance
that he does and I'm thankful for any help I can get!

After having the NWF backyard habitat certification application sitting
in a file, filled out but lacking a sketch and photo, I applied online
yesterday and viola! I'm certified!  Pretty easy and there's no stamp
involved!

Hi Eva,

I use a floating stock tank heater, not a real big one, and it doesn't
seem to make any impact on my electric bill.  I think the secret here is
to make sure that you clean the element real well in the spring when you
remove it. I soak the element (which is covered with lime and crud) in
vinegar for a couple of days and brush it clean.  I imagine that the
lime works as an insulator, so you use more electricity for the same
effect.  Good Luck. Rich in Z-5 where there is a foot of new snow on the
ground and still coming down.
