You are right about commercial one off binding being expensive, I've had
good luck checking the printing/typography portions in the UN journalism
dept. Maybe something like that exists near you.

That was one of the first good references I bought when I got interested
in gardening. I used it so much the binding gave out. By then I had
purchased their brown book. I submitted a suggestion to AHS for their 75
best plants and won a copy of the brown. I called and asked if they
wouldn't mind substituting the green (older and $10 cheaper) and they
agreed. I find A-Z more useful (the binding is shot on that now, too) so
my newer green book is still intact. But A-Z (published in both navy
blue and silver covers) is arranged alphabetically while the green book
is much better for finding a plant to suit a need.
BTW - what do you-all do when bindings give out? I haven't checked yet but
assume a rebinding service would be pretty expensive.
