Ceres, I am doing this w/ my doublefile and blackhaw viburnums to
preserve the perennials in the beds around them. Every Spring I snip up
another layer of branches. Takes a while but I'm seeing a difference.

Kitty, have you tried pruning up to a more tree like form. I haven't done
this but I am seriously thinking about doing this with my carlesii because it
would allow me to plant under the shrub. My RBH is a tree form.
