Russ' wife, Tonya doesn't live near by and she will have a new baby soon so she is not sure how she is going to be able to meet him. My sister says she will be sure to find a way to help her to be there. Russ will come in to California. Where did your nephew come in too? Were you able to meet him? I think that would be pretty powerful if we all could do that.

Wonderful news, Tricia! I was so happy my nephew, Sam, got home before
the elections. We, too, had to stop sending pkgs at a certain point. He'll
be going back to Iraq again in the fall for another year tour, so I hope
things settle down by then. Does Tonya live on or near the base that Russ
will be coming home to?

This is a message from the Major's wife.  I didn't see the interview on
Nightline, but it doesn't sound like Russ, or any of "our" guys were
featured.  The important news is that there are preparations to bring
our guys home in the works - that is great news!  We don't have a date
yet, but Debby says to send no more packages (you can read this in her
note below).  Also, some of the other Marines have begun to ship things
home like DVDs, extra clothes, etc.  Again, this is great news.

I don't anticipate Russ' return for at least 2 months, so please keep
the letters and motomail going until we get further word.  Again, if you
have any trouble setting up a motomail account, let me know and I can
send you detailed instructions.

This is exciting news for us :)

Colonel Shupp appeared on Nightline last night, Friday Jan. 28.
Perhaps some of you saw him. The interview was very brief, as he sat
in a room with a Marine Corps flag in the background. His words were
only part of a larger story on Fallujah. I don't know when or if he
will be on again, but I wanted you to know what I did at this point.

Please do not send any more packages to our guys. Letters are fine,
but some packages have been returned to the Reserve Center. Colonel
Clark, in Amarillo, said that this is another sign of preparations
for our guys to return home. While their return is still weeks away,
it is part of the process of their eventual departure from Iraq.
Even though we can no longer send our goodies to them, this is
actually a good thing to have happen. As I said above, YOU MAY STILL
SEND LETTERS at this point and in the future I will let you know
when letters should stop as well.

I hope this message finds you all doing well, despite the disturbing
election news from Iraq. I'm sure that you are as proud as I am that
our Marines, and the many other military there, are doing such great
work to bring some hope and peace to the people of Iraq. Although we
miss them terribly, how incredible for them to have such an
important role during this "history-making" time in that part of the
world. And you have played an important role here at home by your
support of them as well.

Good afternoon!  The good news just keeps coming J  Russ' email sounded

very

positive regarding the voting today:

Today went well. only a couple of indirect fire attacks in our entire AO
(area of operations) and no casualties or damage resulting.  We think
between 8,000 and 10,000 Iraqis voted today in Fallujah, so it was a good
day..Saw lots of smiling children and adults today too.  It's amazing the
change that has taken place here. this city was "muj central" and now

there

are white flags flying from homes and the locals are telling us where
weapons caches are.  Maybe there is hope for this country yet.



He also mentioned that there is a rumor going around there about an

earlier

out-of-country date, but that he is skeptical and for me (us) not to get

our

hopes up.
