Yeah, trading is out. We can't import hibiscus from anywhere except Canada. There is a two year quarantine on any Hibiscus coming into this country with the exception of Africa (the entire continent) and Brazil. For those two places Hibiscus are banned completely. Which is unfortunate because one of the most talented hybidizers is from Brazil.
Anyway as far as my shipping there it's dependent on their laws. I haven't gotten that far yet as to alert the plant police. Here's a funny thing: I can't look up another countries laws without getting my ag dept. involved. I have to waste their time and ask them everytime somebody from somewhere asks me an import question. It's really stupid. Most European countries have a special thing against the sweet potato white fly. That's their bug a boo..pardon the pun. Some though like Malaysia will not allow Hibiscus in at all. So, we'll have to see. For tiny Brunei who knows.
I was exporting to the Marshall Islands last year. Their ag dept. was concerned because they had received a dirty load from somewhere else. When mine arrived they didn't even bother to open the box because they saw the USDA sticker on it. Now what, to me, was so funny is that sticker is for Sudden Oak Death Syndrome. Had nothing to do with pests otherwise. As far as I know the Marshall Island don't have oaks...I could be wrong.

Didn't use an atlas--used a blindfold and a pin. So... what kind of phyto-stuff do you have to go through to send them a plant? God forfend they would want to trade plants.

Southeast Asia. On Jan 7, 2006, at 1:49 PM, David Franzman wrote:Hi Donna
Training them to be tree form. Did you notice that some are in hanging baskets? Some varieties are very upright and make a nice tree form and others are just as floppy as can be and make a nice basket. For many that are floppy the flowers hang down and are difficult to see if you in a conventional pot. These varieties, regardless of the color, would be lost if some way was not found to display them. I believe that I was, if not the first, then the second to make baskets using Hibiscus.
By this summer I will have baskets of other species of Hibiscus, Bougainvillea and possibly Abutilons as well. Hanging baskets are a great way to maximize space in a greenhouse as they don't take tablespace. By the way, we are also starting to grow four different varieties of Passifloras and three varieties of Mandevillas. Later on this summer we'll also have several varieties of Colocassias.
Since this is the first year of the tree form I don't have many of them and some nursery in New Jersey just placed an order for about a third of what I have.
Geography lesson: I just blew it. I thought this was someplace else. I just an order from Brunei. Where is Brunei?.

I always knew you could do it David :) Man... appears they loved the storm, as they are blooming their fool heads off there... Glad I don'thave to choose just one, it would REALLY be tough! Are those really purple in color? Love #6 too....Dumb question- Are you training them to be tree form or is that just a different variety?
