RE: Rain again

In regards to the price of hay, it is like anything else...supply and
demand. I'm sure the supply is way down because of the drought. Shipping
hay in from elsewhere must include shipping costs (with fuel prices on the
rise thanks to Iran and other factors) as well as the cost of personnel to
haul the rolls. I doubt you can get many rolls onto one flatbed.

It's a catch 22 situation. If you put in price controls (like President
Jimmy Carter) you put small farmers in other areas out of business because
they can't afford to grow and ship their product. The long haul drivers
won't haul it if they can't make some profit over the cost of their fuel and
depreciation on their rigs and they too have to get a fair wage. There are
no winners or easy answers here.

It reminds me of the "dust bowl" era, sad to say, as far as the drought, but
restricted to a smaller area thus far. Of course they thought most of the
damage was due to over-grazing and over-use of farm lands (poor tilling and
planting methods) but the drought certainly aggravated a desperate
situation.

Blessings,
Bonnie (SW OH - zone 5)

There should be some assistance available. Isn't there a Farm Bureau or
some such organization there? This has got to be hard on people with any
kind of animals like horses. I don't know how far a roll of hay goes,
but $100 is absolutely highway robbery.

Pam, that's awful. I'm really sorry to hear that. Isn't Farm Aid supposed to

help with that kind of thing? Even the small farms I mean?
