I grew up in LA, probably two score years before you, Cyndi. When I was 11-12, I had a prepubescent dream of becoming an astronomer. I spent as much time as I could afford in streetcar fare at the Griffith Observatory-Planetarium. My father built a platform on top of a shed for me to use as an observation deck, and he bought me a passing fair telescope with which I could not only see Neptune and Uranus, but could find most of the variable stars and novas that were regularly reported in Popular Science. The night sky was not pristine, but the "blackout" imposed by WWII helped a whole lot.

I grew up in Los Angeles. We weren't much for camping vacations either, so it wasn't until I got married and moved here that I knew what was meant by "the Milky Way". And it was years after that before I spent a night far enough from civilization to see the real night sky. Can't see the Milky Way here anymore, too many lights. There are still more stars visible than in L.A. but not much. It was like being in a planetarium. Not anymore. Too much light pollution, and in the summer, haze. d ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jesse Bell" <silverhawk@flash.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 10:19 AM Subject: Re: [CHAT] invasivesThat is often the comment when people visit my place and walk outsideatnight. They stand there with their mouths hanging open, looking at all the stars, that they "haven't seen in forever!" I live so far out that the city lights don't affect my place as much. I can sit out there inmyhot tub and watch them all night long.
