Thanks, Bonnie. It doesn't seem to be quite that transparent in Florida, but I have written to the Secretary of State's office and asked where it's hidden.

Most state governments have a source you can check on the net to see how much of your donation actually goes to the organization and how much goes to the professional solicitor. I recently checked on the Tennessee PoliceFederation and found that only 17% went to the Police Federation.[Original Message] From: james singer <islandjim1@verizon.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Date: 1/15/2008 2:23:43 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] OTQ I kinda like that, Rich. And while I don't have nine kids to amuse [thank goodness], I do know how to say "Can you hang on for a sec?" Seems like every cop in Florida has his own benevolent society, which we seem to have supported last year. Maybe I can just put the phone down on the table and go back to reading my book. My good friend Jim Kelly has 9 kids, he says it's kinda neat, when the phone folks call, he gives the phone to a 2 year old. Has been doing that quite a while. Says he isn't bothered very much, and it keeps the kids entertained. The phone folks, on the other handdon't enjoy it nearly as much, since they can't break the connection until he does. I think it's great. Donna wrote:no DTD allowed here. Although I will get kids coming to the door selling some kind of school thing- candy bars, magazines....I do feel sorry for the telemarketers who call my aging mothers housetho..... they get the speach about getting a real job instead of bothering old folks like her... But they didn't usually get to me because my doorbell doesn'twork :+) One guy finally confronted me in the driveway. We talked at length, butVerizon could in no way match what I get from Comcast. So he gave up.Then around Tgvg they sent a young girl here. Again, Verizon can't match what I get from Comcast. One difference in her spiel was that several times she mentioned that Comcast used copper wire which she said is nowhere near as good as what Verizon has. I explained that Ft Wayne's REA Wire is a large producer of the copper wire and I'd much rather keep a local manufacturer in business. Finally, she told me essentially that Comcast would be defunct in the coming year and then I'd be sorry because it would cost me twice as much to convert. (well, she said it more nicely than that, but that's the gist of it.) We've had a big increase in door-to-door salesmen--from zero 6 months ago to two-three a day now. We've also had four Verizon salesmen in the last 5 day [not counting Sunday, of course] peddling their new FiOS [fiber-optic system] internet/cable channel/long distance hookup service. Since they tore up most of the front yards around here when they installed the fiber-optic cable, you'd think they would besmart enough to let the neighborhood ire quell before bragging aboutwhat they did. But since their cable competitor here is Comcast, it's become a tussle between dumb and dumber.
