Re: protection help

The difficult thing about the boxes is that sometimes I don't recognize the item so I don't know what to allow or deny.

ahh.. comcast is picking up the license for McAfee....

zone Alarm will annoy you at first. those darn boxes will be coming up
telling/asking you what to do. Once you get it set, they rarely show up.
what I like about it - you can check the logs when something isn't
working and switch it trusted. You can also set the programs to ask,
allow, or red x it and never be bothered with it again. Well actually
some things I red X so they can't run in the background but when I want
to use them it is an easy switch.

Well, I've so far installed Zone Alarm and AVG.

AVG asked if I wanted to upgrade the virus defs, but didn't allow me to
answer "yes". Instead I had to click either folder or internet. ??? I tried the help info, but that didn't make it much clearer, so I picked folder. So then it spent almost 2 hrs scanning my computer and found one virus which it fixed. THEN it tells me I still have old defs, so folder meant "no" I guess. So this time I picked "intenet" and now I'm downloading the upgrade and will
have to give it over to 2 more hours to rescan everything. Who writes this
stuff?

So it looks like downloading Search & Destroy and Adaware are going to have
to wait awhile.

I was afraid of conflicts, so I took off what I had first. I planned to
immediately go get the other stuff, but got stumped by the firewall thing.
I'm checking now for Aone Alarm, thanks.

I use Zone Alarm, the free version on my laptop, the pro on my desktop.

But Yikes! You have no protection now? I usually download everything I'm
planning to use, then uninstall whatever was there.

OK, I'm on the verge now...
I have completely deleted MacAfee and am totally vulnerable. I would
like to try the free versions of the suggested items first. I have
found:
AVG virus protection
AVG spyware protection
Adaware adware protection
Search & Destroy by Spybot

However, I don't think any one mentioned Firewall protection. I need
that don't I? I googled it and found some free products, but nothing I
recognize. Has anyone heard of or used
Comodo
Zone Alarm
Sunbelt Kerio
Outpost
or something else you'd suggest?

I use AVG, AdAware, and Spybot also, since they are free and so far they
work well. There, you have my 2 cents worth.

Judy Browning wrote:
Tech support at my ISP recommends AVG for virus/spam, AdAware & Spybot
Search & Destroy. These are all freeware. I only run the last 2 a
couple times each week. AVG scans every day. So far so good. I got so
annoyed with the Norton that came on my computer and McAfee was just
as irritating to me.

Thanks - I also got a message from Marge, touting the wonders of AVG.
I think I'm headed that way!

Mother and I have used this AVG free program for years w/ no
problems
whatsoever. Worth a try, doesn't cost a dime!
