Cyndi, I cut my roses down very low each spring after a good bud show but
before leaves have opened. I cut back all but the very strong canes making
sure the center is opened for good air circulation. You would not kill the
rose by pruning severely however as your root stock would still be good. All my
roses are now own root roses however I always pruned grafted roses the same.
