I've actually been growing it successfully here in zone 5b for a couple
of years.  Michigan State University lists it as zone 5 also:

I've also grown Lathyrus latifolius in Chicago as a perennial -- both 
'Blushing Bride' and 'Red Shades' are doing well and came produce vines
up to 4' high.  Michigan State lists that one has hardy to zone 3:

So I'm going to stick by my guesses.  :)
