This plant is hardy to zone 5, but as you said, does not retain old wood.
Many people grow it here just for the beautiful leaves.  We have 16
cutting-grown plants of this blooming their heads off right now, but this
may be their only bloom.  'Lemon Wave' is another variety that is grown more
for the leaves than for the flowers.  It may be possible with protection and
wrapping to get a Mareisii to bloom here.
