David, it does die. But it also usually has two or three suckers. The one in the lobby is in a 7-gallon pot; it has two suckers.

This banana has become trendy as far north as zone 7B [5 degrees F].
Blooms last 5 to 6 months. Here's a link to a picture of the bloom on a
plant in the lobby of my work place.
