Pam, it wants very good drainage so I planted it in my xeriscape bed.
Typical clay very heavily amended with sand topped with a rock mulch.
Same conditions I grow lavenders in.

Can it take clay soil though??  A lot of that xeriscape stuff needs
better drainage.  What is your soil like?
