hosta problem

I put in a Hosta bed under a Norway Maple in 1995 and all have done quite
well over the years.  However, I just noticed that 'Candy Hearts' and
'Golden Tiara' are looking [I]thin[/I].  Closer inspection shows a lot of
dead leaves below - dead leaves of this season's growth.  The others, too
many to mention, all seem fine.  What would cause this?  Should I lift these
two?
