Kitty, I would agree with the vole answer.  I have a Heurchera 'chatter Box' 
border with 9-10 plants which all look bad right now.  They looked good early 
spring.  The voles work heavily in that area so I suspect I have that problem. 
 Hope to dig one up tomarrow to see if there is visable damage to the root 
system.
